ON THE PHOTOS: The photos below are of two of the Kantor
brothers (Gerry and Phil) surfing at South Mission Beach and Sunset
Cliffs, both in San Diego, California, during the early sixties,
when they both were between 13 and 15 years old. The photos are
frame grabs from 8mm home movies. The picture quality is not very
good, but the 8mm film they came from is over 40 years old. What's
interesting about these photos, is that there's no one else out
in the water! |

SUMMER REVISITED
Phil Kantor does a (hopefully) comic take-off on the Endless
Summer (1964) poster, which showed a profile of a surfer holding
a surfboard on his head and walking into the sunset. |

a wave to wash over the rocks, then quickly paddle onto the
rock and stand up with your board before the water receded.

Phil, riding the beach break at South Mission Beach in the
early '60's.
Leucadia Surf School is dedicated to the memory of Phil Kantor,
a talented surfer who always surfed better than his older
brother, Gerry Kantor (which was very annoying.)
R.I.P.,
